t's time for the return of Key West to Havana Travel Dear Mr. Obama, Tourism has been part of Key West's day-to-day life throughout its history and is undoubtedly a major part of its future. And how does Key West continue to attract visitors? With our history - for a small island we've got big history. And a major part of our island's history is in its Cuban connection. That connection is irrefutable, but it's currently broken. It is time for the return of Key West to Havana travel. Imagine a world where history buffs can visit both Key West AND Havana in one vacation. Where a student of history can see both sides of every story in the Key West/Cuba connection, from cigarmaking to the relics of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Our hotels and guesthouses would be full - the restaurants, stores and attractions would be bustling. Charter boat captains and museum curators alike would all thank you. Reopening this age-old route between Key West and Havana is of vital importance to our economy. And Key West is ready, just as we are every time opportunity knocks like in 1912 and 1935. Our city fathers are ready. Our ferry terminal is ready. We don't need another bailout, just sign the papers and let us get to work. We know you're reviewing the logistics and permutations involved in reopening relations with Cuba and we've seen the recommendations from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Brookings Institution. You've already improved the travel situation for Americans with relatives in Cuba. But there's more to do. When you attend the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad this April, please, announce the return of open travel to Cuba from the U.S. Or, even better, come to Key West to make that announcement. We'll give you a Presidential Welcome and we've got the perfect accommodation for you and the First Lady. |
